The Afghan Greyhound comes from the Middle East and used to hunt in the mountains of northern Afghanistan.

History

This smart and independent dog was already a shepherd and guard dog before Europeans set foot in Afghanistan. The breed is pure, with no crossbreeds. English soldiers brought them to England in the early 20th century, and they also came to the United States in the 1930s. Today, they are popular in Europe and the US because of their speed, agility, and hunting ability.

Character

The Afghan Hound is not called the king of dogs for nothing. They are brave, stately and quite stubborn. They are watchful and fond of their family. Being hunting dogs, they have a strong instinct to chase prey. So early training and socialisation are super important. They can be somewhat aloof towards strangers, but never hostile. Although they have a strong character, they quickly feel lonely if they are often alone. With the right upbringing, however, they become great family members.

Health

These dogs have an average life expectancy of about 14 years. They are generally healthy, but they can suffer from grey cataracts and hip dysplasia. They are also sensitive to flea powders and insecticides.

Care

An Afghan Hound requires a lot of grooming. Due to their long hair and thick coat, they need to be bathed at least once a week. Dry fur should not be brushed, which can damage and even molt. There are special brushes you can use to gently handle their fur. They shed on average, so you do need to vacuum regularly.

So, if you are thinking of getting an Afghan Greyhound, prepare yourself for an elegant, independent companion who needs some extra care. Do you have the time and energy to take care of this beautiful dog?
