The Affenpinscher is a lively dog with a rich history dating back to Germany. It has roots with the Brussels and Belgian Griffon and is known for its comical, ape-like appearance.

History

The name "Affenpinscher" comes from the German words "Affe" (monkey) and "Pinscher" (terrier). This dog used to be a lot bigger and served as a farm dog to hunt rodents. Over the years, it was bred smaller and became a popular pet in the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1936, the Affenpinscher was officially recognised by the American Kennel Club.

Character of the Affenpinscher

An Affenpinscher has the stubborn and playful nature of a terrier. With proper socialisation, he gets along well with other dogs and pets. However, he can be a bit protective of his toys and food, making him not always suitable for families with young children. Despite his small size, he has no idea how small he is and can bravely face larger animals.

Health

In general, the Affenpinscher is a healthy breed. However, there are some concerns: their fine bone structure makes them prone to bone fractures, and they can suffer from eye ulcers and infections. Dental and respiratory problems are also common. With good care and regular vet checks, you can prevent many problems.

Care

An Affenpinscher's coat requires some attention. Weekly brushing and combing will keep the coat tidy. The hair in the corners of the eyes sometimes needs to be trimmed to avoid irritation. Trimming is only necessary for show dogs. One advantage: they lose almost no hair.
