The Afador is a mix between an Afghan Greyhound and a Labrador Retriever.

History

Ever heard of an Afador? This rare mix is originally from Alaska. Imagine an Afghan Greyhound, one of the oldest dog breeds in the world, combined with a Labrador, famous for its role as a guide and working dog. In the US, the Labrador is super popular. Although the Afador is a designer dog, many of these dogs unfortunately end up in animal shelters.

Character of the Afador

Training an Afador? That can be a challenge. They are smart, but also stubborn. So if you don't have much experience with dogs, it can be difficult to raise them properly. And do you have young children? Beware, their athletic build can cause them to accidentally knock children over while playing.

But if you get it right, you will get a loyal four-legged companion. They make great watchdogs and will bark when strangers are around. Make sure you have a strict training routine though, otherwise they can get lazy and develop health problems. Do you have a large garden? Then the Afador might be for you.

Health

Generally, Afadors are healthy, but they can have the same health problems as their parents. So regular vet visits are a must. Pay particular attention to swelling, hip and elbow dysplasia and subaortic stenosis.

Care

Afadors come in different colours: black, brown, grey, red and light brown. Their fur is medium-length and straight, and yes, they shed. Make sure you brush at least twice a week to keep their coat in top condition. A good shampoo, recommended by the vet, can help with this. They do better in colder climates, but make sure to wear a warm winter coat if it gets really cold.
